Baby Shower: Vintage French Market Tea Party

A dear friend of mine just had her first baby — a sweet, adorable little girl. We hosted a baby shower in her honor recently and planned it around her passion for French macarons. Guests were treated to afternoon tea with savory and sweet treats.

We came up with a vintage French market theme, evoking strolls through an outdoor market in France — with old world finds, rustic elegance, and a touch of “chic.” Burlap, accented with light pink and grey tones along with pewter and silver serving pieces, created a cohesive design.

One of the hosts made extraordinary lemon-lime shortbread cookies and expertly decorated them. Custom tags coordinating with the stationery suite were attached to each cookie, serving as place cards.

French macarons were the centerpiece of the event. Caramel and raspberry macarons from Adour were showcased on a silver three-tiered tray for guests to enjoy.

The menu was entirely homemade (with the exception of the macarons!) and included petit fours with pink flourishes, chocolate truffles, tuna-stuffed baguette, miniature quiches in pate brisee, black forest ham and brie tea sandwiches, and other delights.

As guests made their way around the buffet table, a pianist played children’s nursery songs softly in the background — how appropriate!

A small book that matched the theme was created so that the gifts could be recorded during the party. The guest of honor was given a gift bag at the end of the party that contained the record, additional macarons, custom thank you notes matching the stationery suite, and a special hand-decorated cookie.

Pink. Pink. And more pink! Pink floral arrangements anchored the tables and even the sparkling lemonade was pink! The arrangements included French tulips and the lemonade was… yes… French!

Family-Friendly Hostess Gifts

While my husband and I do not have children, the majority of our social circle does and we have been blessed by getting to know each of them and watching them grow — their little personalities emerging, their hobbies and interests developing, their clever comments and cute expressions…

So when we are invited to a party at a home where the hosts have children, we try to bring a hostess gift that the whole family will enjoy. For we are thankful not only to spend time with the parents, but to visit with the children as well. A bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers, while lovely, may not express that sentiment quite as well!

Here are a few playful, family-friendly ideas for hostess gifts to bring the next time you are visiting with your friends and their children:

I love these world maps from A+R Store. Perhaps its the education degrees talking, but I love how they serve a dual role — both a playful aesthetic and an opportunity to teach and learn something while at the dinner table. Fun!

These game pads are perfect for a family who is often on the go. Have the pads personalized with the family’s name or with the children’s names. Who doesn’t love a good game of tic-tac-toe or hangman?!

Top of the Cupcake To You!

In case you wondered about this cupcake craze we’ve been going through in recent years? Yah, it’s not going away.  It’s alive and well and growing stronger day by day — especially here in DC.  New “cupcakeries” are popping up left and right and established cupcake purveyors are expanding, confirms a recent Washington Post article on the sweet trend.

If you’ve been hit by the cupcake craze and are planning on serving them at your wedding or next event, why not embellish the cupcakes with special toppers to give your event an even more customized appeal?

Here are a few cupcake toppers that I love (check out the captions for sources and click on the photo to take you there); they’d be fabulous for a wedding, shower, birthday, retirement party, anniversary… you name it!

Make it a Sweet Labor Day

It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is almost upon us and, with it, the end of summer. Labor Day weekend is the perfect opportunity to get friends together and enjoy one last summer celebration.

What better way to cherish summer for a just a bit longer than with summer’s sweetest treat: ice cream.  Here’s some inspiration for hosting an Ice Cream Social both children and adults will love:

1) Start with great ice cream.

Your obvious options here are store-bought or homemade. If you go with store-bought, stop by your favorite local ice cream parlor and buy a few of your favorite flavors. Nielsen’s Frozen Custard (technically different from ice cream, I know…) in Vienna, VA is my go-to place (the staff are on a first-name basis with me and my husband — scary!); I love the bumbleberry custard.

If you go the homemade route, Buttermilk Ice Cream is a satisfying choice and a great foundation for sundaes. Offering more “avant garde” flavors is a way to insert a little “chic” into the Social. Try something like Basil Ice Cream
or for a “grown-ups only” selection, why not Jack Daniel’s Ice Cream With Jack Daniels Fudge Chunks?

For even more bespoke options, check out Fine Cooking‘s Ice Cream Recipe Builder and get creative!

2) Offer Tasty Toppings

To “dress” the ice cream, you’ll need three categories of toppings: 1) mix-ins or toppers; 2) sauces; 3) whipped cream. For the latter, my preference is always homemade (That’s my mother’s influence. We NEVER had anything but homemade whipped cream growing up — hence, my longstanding disdain for Cool Whip…).

Get creative with your toppings but be sure to also include the standards like M&Ms, crumbled Oreo cookies, chopped nuts, and diced fruit.

For sauces, homemade is also best. If time is an issue, however, you may want to enlist the help of  Knipschildt who offers a wonderful selection of artisan sauces.

3) Make it Pretty.

Lastly, consider some fun ways to set up your ice cream smorgasbord extravaganza. I love these fortune cookie topping holders; the instructions look very easy.

Because Summer is over and stores have already moved in Fall merchandise, you may find deals on ice cream bowls and other ice cream accoutrements. For example, sundae glasses are on sale at Sur La Table. Snatch them up!

Pint-Sized Hospitality: Children at Weddings

I often work with Brides who wonder about the best way to extend hospitality to children attending their wedding. This is such an important question because, no matter their age, all guests should feel welcomed and cared for at special events such as weddings.

Once a Bride & Groom have determined to invite children to the wedding, the question then becomes how to ensure that the children and their parents alike have a wonderful time. First, a Bride must determine:

  1. How old are the children?
  2. How many children will there be of each age?

These questions will help a Bride determine what type of support will be needed to care for the children during the wedding and reception.

Also critical is speaking with each set of parents and asking them what would be most helpful for them.

  1. Would they like to have a babysitter for the children the entire time?
  2. Should that babysitter stay with the children at the hotel or should the children and the babysitter attend the events? Which events?
  3. What is the child’s bedtime?
  4. What are some of the child’s favorite toys, games, movies, learning activities and which of those favorites may still hold true by the time the wedding arrives?
  5. Does the child have any food allergies or other special needs?
  6. Will the child require a booster seat, a high chair, or a regular chair?

The answers to the above will help direct the Bride in her decision-making around how to entertain and care for the children. Perhaps a babysitter at the hotel is the right thing, or several babysitters in a room with games and activities, or more elaborate activities such as art projects or sports challenges set up with attendants.

Whatever a Bride ultimately decides to do, a custom bag of goodies for each child guest is always a nice gesture. The bags should be filled with age-appropriate activities for the child to enjoy, along with a welcome note sharing how delighted the Bride & Groom are that the child is there celebrating with them.

Here are a few ideas for some fun items to include in these custom bags:

Announcing baby with style. Stylish stationery, that is.

A client reached out to me recently and shared that she is pregnant. We worked on her wedding together a year ago and I am so excited for her and her husband! They are a wonderful couple and I know their new family will be beautiful.

She and I brainstormed some fun baby shower ideas which reminded me of these gorgeous baby announcements and shower invitations I saw on Armato Design.

Given how beautiful their pre-designed Baby Collection is (I am a particular fan of the “Playtime” design”), I can only imagine how pleased one would be with one of their custom designs.
