DIY Layer Cakes

from Food & Wine magazine Feb 2012
I was just talking with some friends the other day who shared that the new dessert buzz is all about layer cakes. Upon opening my February 2012 issue of Food & Wine, I’d have to agree. The magazine has an informative spread on DIY layer cakes, offering recipes for cakes, fillings, and frostings. Use your creativity and create a layer cake that is totally unique by mixing and matching the flavors.
I highly recommend picking up the issue but here are a just few of the recipes you can access online.
Filling: Dark Chocolate Mousse Filling, White Chocolate Mousse Filling
Frosting: Rich Chocolate Buttercream, Hazelnut Buttercream
Cake: Brown Butter Layer Cake, Double Chocolate Layer Cake
Momofuku Milk Bar Cookie Mix
One of my favorite places in New York is Momofuku Milk Bar. Part of David Chang’s Momofuku empire, Milk Bar offers creative takes on sweet treats with creations like Cereal Milk Ice Cream and Crack Pie — two of my favorites.
Now you don’t have to go to New York to sample Milk Bar’s creations. Williams-Sonoma is now offering Momofuku Milk Bar Cookie Mix in three different flavors — blueberry & cream, corn, and “composte.”
I am craving cookies and milk right about now…
New Year’s Day Dessert Bar
I hosted a little New Year’s Day brunch at my house to welcome in 2012. I had a lot of fun putting it together — especially the dessert bar. The bar included chocolate-cinnamon mocha cake, pistachio cake, pumpkin spice cake, pizzelles, coconut macaroons, rosemary lemon bars, cafe au lait pudding, and banana pudding with.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Nutella!
A dear friend of mine is crazy for Nutella. And I mean who wouldn’t be? The chocolate, hazelnut goodness can turn a piece of bread into a sinfully good sweet. It’s magical! Here is a roundup of some desserts that feature the beloved spread. Click on the photos below to take you to the recipes.
Alphabet Cake for an A-B-C Baby Shower
An alphabet theme is a great theme for a baby shower and I love this alphabet-themed cake, courtesy of Martha Stewart, that could be the centerpiece of the food table. It may not be as easy as 1-2-3, but the look of this A-B-C cake makes it worth the effort!
Chocolate Covered Football Strawberries
My favorite season has begun. No, not Fall. Football. Football season is here! In honor of the kick-off of the college and NFL seasons, here is a little sweet treat. You can buy them, but they would also be really fun to make.

S’more please
Everywhere I look these days I am seeing s’mores. Including in my house. My husband likes to make them with a blow torch. Not a creme brulee blow torch, mind you. A real, industrial one. But I have to say, it makes a darn good s’more!
Here are some fun new ways that people are interpreting s’mores.
A Sweet Little Cookbook
By now you likely know of my deep love and affection for my Breville Individual Pie Maker. I have taken to making pies multiple times a week — not good for the waist line, but so deliciously rewarding! I was frustrated, though, that the instructions that came with the Pie Maker only listed a few each of sweet and savory recipes. But then, I found this. The “Mini Pies” cookbook available at Williams-Sonoma. If you have the Pie Maker, you MUST buy this book. It opens up a whole new world of pies, like s’mores pies and one of the best pumpkin pies I have ever had. If you don’t have the Pie Maker, run, don’t walk, to Williams-Sonoma to buy one.
