His & Hers Wedding Favors

At a recent wedding, the bride offered different favors for the men, women, and children in attendance. I thought it was a nice way to personalize the experience for guests. You could have a lot of fun selecting unique gifts for everyone. Guys could get baseballs if the groom was a sports-lover; women could get chocolate or pashminas; and kids could get small, fun games. Often, general favors don’t fit for everyone so this is a thoughtful to way to make guests feel special.

The summer wedding below featured custom spice rub for the fellas, hand fans for the ladies, and bubbles for the young’uns. Clever!

Katherine & Allen: An Elegant Evening Garden Party

I had a wonderful time working with Katherine and Allen on their wedding. One of the things I loved about the process was watching how they interacted with one another. It was so evident that each, in a beautiful way, brought something out of the other that no one else could. They lit up around each other and had fun together.

Their wedding was a great reflection of them — fun, elegant, and natural. It took place at Rust Manor in Leesburg and was captured in these gorgeous photographs by the talented Leah of Studio Juno.

The cocktail hour was set on the garden lawn accompanied by music from an acoustic guitarist. In the tent, the female guests were treated to pashminas to cut the evening chill. Beautifully packaged Haribou gummy bears — the bride and groom’s favorite — were given as favors. Vintage milk glass arrangements warmed each table and reflected a spectrum of pinks in keeping with the pink and grey-themed event.

Congratulations, Katherine & Allen!

Sweet Treats for A Good Cause

It’s no surprise that I have a soft spot for good baked goods. Pies, tarts, cakes, cookies… I am not picky! So I was particularly excited to find a bakery that not only creates delicious sweets, but also gives 15% of each purchase to a charity you choose.

Baking for Good is an “online bake sale that supports great causes.”  They offer a variety of treats, ranging from cookies to bars to granola and they all look delicious. Their margarita shortbread, for example, is calling my name.

They even offer gift packs and suites of themed iced sugar cookies. The cookies would be fabulous for a party, a baby or wedding shower, or an engagement party.

How fabulous would it be to share with guests that each bite they take of their sweet treat goes to an even sweeter cause like First Book (one of my favorite non-profits) or The American Cancer Society.

Here’s to all the charitable sweet tooths out there!

A {caramel} apple a day…

One of the most popular Halloween treats out there is candied apples. Granted, they are not the easiest to eat, but the messiness is worth it. All that gooey caramel and rich chocolate covering the crunch of a tart apple = pure deliciousness!

These whimsical fall treats are great not only for Halloween but would be perfect for wedding favors, at a children’s party, or served at a fall engagement party… you name it!

A bride I worked with a couple of years ago gave a candied apple to each of her guests as a favor. It made for a beautiful presentation on the place setting.

Making candied apples is fairly easy and there are many recipes out there to help guide you through the process. To make apples with a little more interest than the standard caramel apples, consider these two recipes.

The first, from Gourmet magazine (don’t get me started… I WILL start crying.) is a true grown-up version of candied apples. Don’t these  red wine caramel apples look amazing?

I also love these mini candied apples from Martha Stewart — even easier to eat than the larger versions.

Or, if you don’t feel like making candied apples from scratch, check out this fabulous option from Dean & Deluca:

Day Four – Celebrating Julia Child: A Countdown to Julie & Julia

Just one more day until Julie & Julia hits the theaters!

For Day Four of Celebrating Julia Child: A Countdown to Julie & Julia, I am taking inspiration from the August issue of Food & Wine magazine. The magazine suggests hosting a “We Heart Julia” Party with one of Julia Child’s favorite dishes: quiche.

Adorable party favor ideas include aprons and t-shirts with Julia Child quotes. Another idea is to order a set of 4-6 custom napkins (foryourparty.com is a great source) each featuring a different Julia Child quote.

Why else would they host a contest in connection with the Julie & Julia movie?! Test your luck and enter to win a fabulous Dean & Deluca prize!

Move over cupcakes, artisan chocolates are the new sheriff in town.

Don’t get me wrong, I love cupcakes. And with so many bakeries focusing on cupcakes these days, it would be silly not to love them. There are some exceptional cupcake vendors in the DC area — from those like Georgetown Cupcake focusing exclusively on cupcakes to more off-the-beaten-track operations like Victoria’s Cakery in Fairfax that makes not only divine cupcake treats (not even featured on their website, but well worth the inquiry), but wonderful cakes, as well.

But, let’s face it, the cupcake craze is a little “yesterday.” We’ve been there and done that.

The latest trend that I encourage clients to consider is serving a sampling of artisan chocolates and confections. Artisan chocolatiers are not new, but have certainly been on the rise in recent years. By serving a variety of these bit-sized treats, guests can sample several different flavors and types. Here’s just a taste (pardon the pun) of some of the delicious treats you can procure for your next event:

Recchiuti’s work is amazing. (My husband and I savored their “make-your-own s’mores kit” that the Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay features on their room service menu for guests with terrace firepits off their suites. De-lish!) One of their best treats, in my opinion, is their Fleur de Sel Chocolates — the salty/sweet combo is a popular, en vogue combination offered by many chocolatiers these days.

Jin Patisserie sells not only delicious chocolates but presents them in gorgeous silk boxes — a particularly beautiful gift for your guests.

Christopher Norman has a wonderful selection of handmade chocolates. Norman’s art background shines through in every beautiful piece he creates. I have long been a fan of their “domino set” — a perfect treat for your next Game Night party.

Knipschildt is another incredible chocolatier. Included in their product offerings are “giant chocolates” — larger chocolate pieces that are more indulgent than more traditional bite-sized chocolates. Even more to love!

Artisan marshmallows are also very en vogue, often gracing the final “sweet treats” plates served at upscale restaurants these days. Vosges Chocolate features a divine twist on the traditional fluffy treat — the caramel marshmallow.

Vosges also has a great selection of favors. A client used their Asian Takeout Box chocolate favors at a wedding and they looked (and tasted) lovely.

Change purses are so practical — especially for urban dwellers like us in DC who are constantly looking for change to feed the meters. And the inscription on each purse can’t help but get you excited about summer!

The best thing: they are on sale! What’s not for a recessionista to love?!
