Bringing the outdoors in: pinecone decor inspiration

I am always looking for non-floral decor alternatives for weddings and other events. My husband and I went on a hike today in Great Falls and everywhere I turned I found inspiration for Fall decor!  My mind is now spinning with ideas for incorporating natural elements — like pinecones, greenery, branches, and acorns — into designs.

In fact, I worked on an event recently where a team of us collaborated on nature-inspired centerpieces — we filled clear vessels with pears and apples and used acorns and pinecones as filler. I can’t take credit for the design, but it looked great!

Below are a few images that are inspiring me to go out and collect all of the pinecones I can find — then I’ll be prepared for Fall decorating next year, too!

Welcome guests this season with a fire

My husband and I took a last-minute trip to Massachusetts this week. We stayed in Boston the first half of the week while he attended a conference for work; the latter part of the week we’ve spent at the Inn at Castle HIll in my hometown of Ipswich.

The Inn oozes hospitality and when I was here earlier this year, it inspired me to write this post on ways to make your overnight guests feel comfortable and welcome.

On this most recent visit we were charmed by the Innkeeper’s offer to build a fire for us each evening in the main sitting room. Relaxing by the hearth in overstuffed chairs, sipping coffee and playing Scrabble, we could not have been any more at home.

So as you welcome guests into your home this Fall and Winter, be sure remember the treat a bright, crackling fire can be. Follow these simple reminders on building a great fire.

Fireplace tools are a necessity for tending to a fire. Since they are always on display in one’s home, be sure to choose not only functional but stylish sets.

Baby, Won’t You Light My Fire…

I don’t smoke, but do I find myself in need of a light more often than one would imagine. Lighting candles on a birthday cake… votives the dining table… starting a fire in the fireplace or the fire pit outside….

Matchbooks are certainly helpful in those scenarios. In fact, we keep our ever-growing stash of matchbooks from restaurants we’ve patronized in decorative tin canisters. Matches, however, can be a pain — especially when there are a lot of candles to light! This is when a lighter can come in handy. (My husband prefers using our creme brulee blow torch when we need a light, but there is such a thing as too much “fire power”!)

I’ve recently stumbled across some beautiful lighters, which would not only be practical in the home of an entertainer, but would also flaunt a little style, as well.
