A Thankful Guest: Chic Thank You Cards to Express Your Gratitude
My recent post on the DC Ladies blog focused on the lost of art of letter writing — in this case, sending handwritten thank you notes to hosts following a dinner party or other gathering at their home. There are so many fabulous thank you notes out there to choose from, like the one below. Read the full post on DC Ladies blog to see more!
Family-Friendly Hostess Gifts
While my husband and I do not have children, the majority of our social circle does and we have been blessed by getting to know each of them and watching them grow — their little personalities emerging, their hobbies and interests developing, their clever comments and cute expressions…
So when we are invited to a party at a home where the hosts have children, we try to bring a hostess gift that the whole family will enjoy. For we are thankful not only to spend time with the parents, but to visit with the children as well. A bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers, while lovely, may not express that sentiment quite as well!
Here are a few playful, family-friendly ideas for hostess gifts to bring the next time you are visiting with your friends and their children:
I love these world maps from A+R Store. Perhaps its the education degrees talking, but I love how they serve a dual role — both a playful aesthetic and an opportunity to teach and learn something while at the dinner table. Fun!
These game pads are perfect for a family who is often on the go. Have the pads personalized with the family’s name or with the children’s names. Who doesn’t love a good game of tic-tac-toe or hangman?!
Dominoes is such a fun game and it can be adapted for many age groups. This colorful set is fabulous!
Hostess Gift: Eco-Chic Napkin Set
I’m always looking for great hostess gifts — something unique to bring when visiting a friend or attending a party.
These numbered napkins from Heather Lins make a perfect gift for so many reasons!
When each guest or family member is assigned a number, there is no question of whose napkin is whose. No more wondering, “Is this my napkin?” And using linen napkins for everyday dining is so eco-chic! (For more on using linen napkins for everyday, check out this previous post.)
Heather Lins has chosen a fabulous font which makes the design so appealing. It’s fresh and modern and the neutral palette can work with any decor.
In my opinion, a home can never have too large a linen napkin collection, making these a near foolproof gift!
Custom Granola
There’s something about eating granola that always makes me feel healthy. After a bowl of homemade granola and yogurt (one of my all-time favorite breakfasts) I feel like patting myself on the back: “You did it! Way to eat healthfully today. (Nevermind what you will eat for lunch, or dinner, or dessert, or a late-night snack… ). Gold star for you!”
So when I recently read about MixMyGranola — an online store where you can customize your very own blend of granola, I nearly dropped my yogurt-covered spoon.
The process is easy. Simply start with a base of either granola (organic, low-fat, or french-vanilla) or organic muesli and then add your choice of mix-ins. It’s like the healthy, breakfast version of Cold Stone (another serious vice of mine).
MixMyGranola custom blends would be a special treat for houseguests and would also make a nice hostess gift.
Beach Party This Weekend? Don’t Forget the Cookies
I just discovered these adorable beach-party-themed cookies from Eleni’s New York. They are a must for entertaining at the beach house this weekend.
The cookies would also make a thoughtful hostess gift when staying at a friend’s beach house.
Shore-inspired host gifts
A friend of mine is letting me use his beach house next week for a little mid-week getaway. I am looking forward to doing a little work, taking a few long walks on the beach, and spending some quiet time in prayer. It’s so generous of him to let me use his home and I want to be sure to let him know how grateful I am.
A gracious guest always brings a gift for his or her host to show their appreciation. There are infinite options for host gifts, but above all, the gift should be something that is in keeping with the host’s taste and preferences. And, of course, just use common sense — don’t buy a bottle of wine for someone who does not drink wine; avoid perfumed items for those with allergies to perfume.
With warmer weather approaching that means trips to the beach and shore homes. When invited to a friend’s shoreside vacation home, consider some of the following shore-inspired host gifts:
A gift certificate to the host’s favorite local restaurant, spa, or boutique – Is there a restaurant your host loves to frequent, a boutique that just opened that you know he or she would like to try? One can rarely go wrong with a gift certificate.
Beach House Guest Book — this is a fitting gift for those that may have just purchased their vacation home.
Barometer — when you really want to splurge, a barometer from Tiffany’s will do the trick.
Serving Tray — I love the idea of filling this serving tray with culinary goodies: chocolates, specialty crackers, locally roasted coffee….
Smart Cooler Bag — for the technophile and picnicker alike! And be sure to have it monogrammed.
Recycled Tote — What could be more nautical than a tote made from recycled sailboat sails? Fabulous.
Rope Knot Doorstop — One doesn’t see doorstops very often these days (why is that?) which I think makes this gift even more unique. It can also be used as a bookend.
Bowl/Coral – Coral is very “in” at the moment. This is a tasteful way to share the trend.
Bacce Ball Set — what’s wrong with a little fun and games… Italian style?!
